HIRAKUD DAM (World's Longest Man-made Dam)

Hirakud Dam is one of the longest dams of the world, located at a distance of 15kms from the main city of Sambalpur in Odisha. The hirakud Dam, built on the Mahanadi River, is approximately 16 miles (26 km) long. The Main Dam, having overall length of 4.8 Km., spans between hills Lamdungri on left and Chandidungri on the right.

On 15 March 1946, Sir Hawthorne Lewis, the Governor of Odisha, laid the foundation stone of the Hirakud Dam. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru laid the first batch of concrete on 12 April 1948.The dam was, however, finished in 1953 and officially opened by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on January 13, 1957.

As per old saying once upon a time diamonds had been found from this place. Hence, the term "hirakud" is derived. Hira is the odia word for diamond.

A twenty-one kilometre trip along the dyke offers a special peacefulness. From the top of the rotating minaret known as the Gandhi Minar on the north or from the Nehru Minar on the opposite end of the dam, one can easily take in the view of the impressive Hirakud Dam and the magnificent expanse of water. During the winter, a sizable number of migratory birds visit this area.

This is the ideal location for a family picnic and outing.

The greatest time to visit Hirakud Dam is from August to October because the entire area is covered in water, enhancing the beauty of the location.
